LDS Music and a Few Extras

Scenario:-

Our music leader is holding up ‘Stop’ and ‘Go’ signs in the chorus of As a Child of God.  The teachers had just been handed their own copy of the song and were looking down at the words rather than look at the music leader.

The children were all paying attention, the Stop sign was held up and one teacher sang through the ‘stop’, completely oblivious until the little person next to the teacher gently tapped them on the arm and piped up “Excuse me *insert name*, you sang through when you were supposed to stop”. 

The teacher glanced up, had a quiet chuckle and exclaimed “Oh, I must have the wrong glasses on today.  Silly me!”.

Tee hee hee- a perfect example of how to deal with situations tactfully.

One of our brilliant CTR teachers was saying that she taught her 5 year olds a lesson on Fasting.  She dedicated the entire lesson to the principle of fasting, along with some hands on activities on the subject.  The next Sunday she reviewed what they had learned the week before.  “Can anyone tell me what Fasting is?”  None of the children answered.  She asked again “Anybody?  Does anyone know what fasting is?”

One child piped up “It’s when you run really, really fast!”.

(Hehehe all that effort put into the lesson, and she got that response.  LOL!)

Yup, you read correctly.  Captain Moroni did indeed come to visit our Primary yesterday.

Captain Moroni was pondering whether to ask for the heating/air conditioning to be turned off.  Despite it being Winter, that room was unusually warm yesterday!

This is our Ward’s Seminary Teacher.  He had presented a lesson to his Seminary Students as Captain Moroni a few weeks prior, and when I heard that he had this amazing costume and was about to return it, I pleaded with him to dress up as a Scripture Hero for Primary.  He did so gladly.

I wish I could show you the looks on the children’s faces but due to privacy reasons, I can’t. Needless to say those precious faces were awestruck, amazed and absolutely delighted!

He asked the children to guess who he was.  “Nephi”? ” “Daddy?” “Leonitis?” (WHO??) – Our Pianist was trying to confuse the kids ;D  “Helium” (“No, I am not floating away”) “Captain Moroni” (“Yes! I am a captain, and my name is Moroni.  That boy should get a prize, if there is a prize to be had”)

Captain Moroni shared a few passages of scripture with us outlining his character – Alma 48: 11-13,17.

He talked about putting on the whole Armour of God.

We sang Scripture Power for him at the end and I don’t think I’ve heard the kids sing it quite as enthusiastically as they did.

The question remains…how am I going to top this Scripture Hero??

We did the ‘My Body is a Temple’ singing time yesterday and it went really well (you can find it here:http://denleymusic.com/primaryblog/?p=172)

One of the pictures had someone in the bath with other cleaning items such as tissues, toilet paper, soap, shampoo, a hairbrush and comb, a hairdryer and what looked like a shaver/razor.  The child who had picked the picture asked what it was, so I explained that it was a razor and pointed out that our male teachers in Primary would use one of these, or something like it to shave the  hair off their face. “Oh okay”, that made sense.

Then a little voice from the second row pipes up “And sometimes Mummies use them to shave the hair off their legs”.

Amidst the giggles and stiffled laughter from the teachers I agreed whole heartedly with this young person that we Mummies do indeed do that “and now it’s time to move on”.

I’m going to put this under ‘Sunday Funnies’ although it isn’t really that funny, so to speak.  Well, it is kind of funny seeing who we get to dress up ;D

Each month I have been asking someone to dress up as a ‘scripture hero’ and tell us a little about their favourite person in the scriptures.  We are trying to “liken all scripture unto us” and I think it ties in really well with our theme for the year.  So far we have had members of our Primary Presidency, our Pianist, me (yay!) and members of our Bishopric.

I purchased some cool looking swords, made some CTR shields, and my mother-in-law made some fantastic cloaks.  Of course ALL the kids want to dress up too, so I made some mini cloaks, and I choose a couple of children each time we do this to dress up.  Then we HAVE to sing Scripture Power!  I have each child’s name in a container that has a divider in the middle.  I have every one’s name in there, and once they have had a turn of dressing up, I move their name across into the ‘done’ side, so that everyone will get a chance to dress up.  I tend to have them dress up on all the Sundays we sing ‘Scripture Power’ instead of just the Sundays I invite someone in to talk to us, otherwise we’ll never get through everyone.

We keep a limit of 2 mins for our Scripture hero to talk.   The best ones are where they give the children clues, and they have to guess who it is. 

We had our Second Counsellor on Sunday, and he was SO EXCITED.  It’s not often you get a chance to dress up like a hero on Sunday.  Here’s a glimpse:-

He spoke about Nephi (the first), but tried to trick the children a little by having lots of similarities to Joseph Smith (ie he was tall for his age, we first hear about him when he was about 14, he was very strong, he did whatever the Lord commanded him to do, his brothers picked on him a lot). 

I hope we’re inspiring these children to learn about our ‘heroes’ in the scriptures and to develop that spark of interest that is so important.

One of our littler Primary members was reciting the Fourth Article of Faith for us during Opening Exercises with a little help from his Mum.  He was doing so well:-

“We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are; First, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.  Second, Repentance.  Third, Baptism by Emergency for the remission of sins.  Fourth, laying on of hands for the Gift of the Holy Ghost.
